Beyond Victoria Falls lies one of Africa's most rewarding — and least crowded — safari countries.
Most travellers come to Zambia for one thing: the mighty Zambezi and the spectacular Victoria Falls — known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'the smoke that thunders'. Mist rises from one of the world's most impressive waterfalls and you feel it on your face from half a kilometre away.
But the country opens up the further inland you go. South Luangwa is the home of the walking safari, where you experience the bush at a slower, more intimate pace alongside an excellent guide. The Lower Zambezi offers beautiful river-based safaris, with wildlife often seen along its banks.
Kafue, one of the largest national parks in Africa, adds vast plains, woodlands and wetlands — elephants, lions, antelope and remarkable birdlife in habitats that still feel genuinely unspoilt.
Zambia is for travellers who enjoy nature in its purest form, away from the busier routes. Pair it with Botswana or Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side for a beautifully balanced itinerary.
